Baltimore Life Appoints Dr. Thomas B. Smyth to Board of Directors

OWINGS MILLS, Md. — The Baltimore Life Insurance Company announced the appointment of Dr. Thomas B. Smyth to its board of directors. Dr. Smyth, President and CEO of the University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center (UM SJMC) is a highly accomplished executive in the healthcare sector and a respected leader in the Baltimore community. Under Dr. Smyth’s leadership, UM SJMC has achieved multiple awards for patient safety and patient experience, including being the only hospital in Maryland awarded Healthgrades’ Patient Safety Excellence Award and Outstanding Patient Experience Excellence Award for 2025. During Dr. Smyth’s tenure, over $60 million in philanthropic support has been raised to support over $220 million in critical infrastructure projects to modernize and enhance access to care for the communities they serve. The efforts of Dr. Smyth and the leadership team have resulted in U.S. News & World Report rank as the No. 1 community hospital in Maryland for six consecutive years.

Dr. Smyth has served on several local community boards, including the Y of Central Maryland and Calvert Hall College High School. He was also a member of the Maryland Appellate Judicial Nominating Commission. Dr. Smyth’s educational background includes an undergraduate degree from Princeton University and medical education and training at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Stanford University.
